Fiddle Jam Instruction – general info on "how it works"

After contacting us, an initial telephone interview is conducted where any questions you might have can be answered, and, based on your locale, musical interests, goals, and budget, an appropriate Fiddle Jam Instructor and program is selected.

100% Money back guarantee if, after your first lesson, you decide the Fiddle Jam Way is not for you!

Weekly lessons are pre-paid to our Fiddle Jam office by check or money order (online payments by credit card coming soon!), payable to Fanatical Fitzhugh Music. Having money handled separately from the teaching environment allows our instructors to do what they do best… teach! No distractions, just music.

Once payment is received, the OK to give the lesson(s) goes out to your Fiddle Jam Instructor, who will then contact you directly to arrange for a weekly lesson time convenient to you both. After you take the lesson(s), your instructor then reports to us what lessons were given, and to whom, and we pay them (your instructor).

It is a simple system, but important to understand that our instructors are professionals who do this for their livelihood; and for this reason we have put in place some restrictions as to cancellations to supply them with some measure of income protection (see below).

For private and small group Fiddle Jam lessons, once scheduled with your instructor, you will be expected to continue with consistent weekly lessons. Lessons continue year ‘round. Exceptions are given for major holidays. You may leave the program at any time, but we require a one-week notice for refund of any un-used lesson credit if you choose to temporarily or permanently discontinue your lessons.

Students agree to show up on time, and prepared with instrument (yes, you’d be surprised at the things a student will forget!) and all related equipment, books, assignment notebooks, and recordings.

Parents are of course, always welcome at any of their child’s lessons at anytime… but their constant presence is not necessarily recommended. Why? The average age of our students hovers around the 12-13 year old mark. This is a time of self discovery and expression for these students, and as painful as it might be for parents, we have found that students are much more involved, present, and creative when they don’t have a parent looking over their shoulder. This is especially true in the improvising arts, which more directly tap into the individual’s creative spirit. More self-consciousness than this age group already has naturally, has been found to be not musically or educationally productive. This aspect of course varies with student age, and for our youngest students, close parental involvement and presence is actually a requirement in the beginning. Details of this will be worked out on in individual basis with your instructor.

Fiddle Jam is not just for kids either. Adult students are always welcome, at any ability level, including beginner! Playing the fiddle is something you always dreamed of? It’s never too late! We’ve proven it over and over! Contact us for references if you’d like to be further convinced!

Private instruction policies

Current price for a weekly private "30 + 10" Fiddle Jam lesson is $20. Longer lesson times are available upon request. Contact us for details.

** Special start-up package includes a copy of the Fiddle Jam book and CD for half price ($10) when you pay for the first month of private lessons (4) up front.

Cancellations with a minimum one-week notice will gladly be refunded or credited towards future lessons.

Cancellations with a notice of 24 hours or more can be made up within the same teaching week at the teacher’s convenience, but are otherwise not refunded.

"No shows" or day-of cancellations are forfeited without refund and cannot be made up. We regret that we cannot credit lessons cancelled day of the lesson due to illness or other personal reasons.

We reserve the right to change these policies at any time.

Small Group Lesson policies

Current price for a small group Fiddle Jam lesson with a minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 5 is $10 per student.

Group lesson participants are expected to come on a weekly basis.

Due to the complications of rescheduling all members of a group class, small group Fiddle Jam lessons are on a monthly "tuition only" payment policy. No refunds for missed group lessons. This policy is the same one most gymnastic clubs, karate and dance studios have. We regret that we cannot credit lessons cancelled day of the lesson due to illness or other personal reasons.

Fiddle Jam Club policies

Fiddle Jam Clubs are an exciting alternative social and musical experience for select students who have mastered enough common materials and tunes to assimilate into a performance oriented group of 6 or more. The actual details of the materials covered and how often they meet, are dictated by the overall abilities and availability of the participants involved, but in general, Fiddle Jam Club members play tunes together and explore more advanced performance and improvisational details and concepts as led by our teachers. Many times these groups get to perform in public at real "gigs". Coffeehouses and Bookstores have become Fiddle Jam’s versions of recitals where students not only perform together, but also get to step out and "solo" (improvise). Sometimes students also have the opportunity to learn the basics on a second more chordal oriented instrument through these clubs, such as guitar or mandolin (which shares the same tuning and notes as the violin) so that members can take turns accompanying each other.

Price for this one-hour experience is $10 per student. Due to the complexities of rescheduling a larger group such as this, payments for the Fiddle Jam Club lessons are made as a tuition-based program only. We will not be able to credit you for missed Fiddle Jam Club lessons.
